Weaning: Do not hesitate to finally stop smoking

Stop smoking – that’s what many smokers want. However, it is often difficult to keep up with smoking in the long term. After a successful smoking cessation, staying non-smoker in the long term – that’s the real challenge. Mostly this requires several quit attempts. But with a little help and a clear decision, it is feasible to give up cigarettes permanently. The right motivation and suitable means and methods during the weaning phase as well as strategies for the prevention of relapses are important.

Means and methods for nicotine withdrawal

Probably most smokers try to get away from the stink of their own. “Without support, the success rate at the first attempt, however, is only three to six percent,” says Professor Stephan Mühlig, psychologist, addiction researcher and head of the smoker’s outpatient department at Chemnitz University of Technology.

For some smokers, it helps to reduce tobacco consumption and stop it slowly. “However, this seduces to self-deception and maintains mental dependence longer,” says the search expert. Many sufferers are therefore more successful with the final point method, where they stop from one day to the next. “In contrast, controlled and reduced smoking does not work in the long term for most smokers,” explains Mühlig. There are now numerous means and methods to facilitate smoking cessation.

Therapy in the group

A good success rate is achieved by behavioral weaning programs in the group. These are offered, for example, in the university smoking outpatient clinics on a scientific basis. “The group provides support and generates some kind of helpful social pressure to really hold on,” says Mühlig, who runs such courses himself. The therapy has to be partially paid for itself, five to ten-hour courses cost between 150 and 300 euros.

Statutory health insurances subsidize the measure per year with 75 to 100 euros, some reimburse the total amount. If you are interested, ask your health insurance company if they are involved in the costs. The money invested in one’s own health can be saved quickly by abstaining from cigarettes. After six to eight weeks as a non-smoker, the course for the average consumer alone has been financially worthwhile.

Nicotine replacement and drugs from the pharmacy

Nicotine replacement preparations, for example in the form of chewing gum, patches or lozenges, facilitate weaning by releasing nicotine and thus greatly reducing the withdrawal symptoms. “The preparations are not prescription, but the costs are not replaced by the health insurance companies,” says Mühlig.

In addition, there are other prescription drugs in tablet form that can effectively reduce the withdrawal symptoms and increase abstinence. However, as these can cause serious side effects, they are subject to prescription and must only be taken under medical supervision. These drugs are also not reimbursed by the statutory health insurance.

The e-cigarette is increasingly being used as an alternative to the tobacco cigarette. Mühlig: “Although it is probably less harmful to health, but also not completely unproblematic.Health alone, the complete smoking cessation is recommended.” As weaning the e-cigarette has been controversial. Critics point out that there is no uniform control of the ingredients and nicotine content of the filled liquids.

There are still no long-term studies on the harmfulness of some ingredients. In addition, depending on the design, the devices release more or less nicotine from the fluids. Thus, the user can not determine what dose of nicotine he actually inhaled. On the other hand, some studies show that even steaming nicotine-free e-cigarettes may even lead to lower cigarette consumption.
